Tricking out Your Skateboard
Being part of the skateboard culture is something many outsiders can’t and never will understand. Skate punks are slackers we always hear, and you know what, that’s just fine with us. It doesn’t matter what others think, because they are the ones missing out on the thrills and adrenaline pumping action of being on that ramp and grinding through life.
You see, these people don’t understand the way we express ourselves, but other skate punks do, and really that’s all that matters isn’t it? Of course, some skateboarders can go overboard trying to trick out their boards and just look like posers. So what are some cool ways to trick out your board and express yourself?
Many skateboarders love to throw stickers and decals on their decks. Others love to get a custom paint job. Some do both. No matter which way you do it, this is a great way to give your board a unique look and separate it from the pack.
One of my favorite ways to trick out my board is using different colored wheels. You can use four of the same color, or four different colors. I prefer to have two different colors, but it is entirely up to you. You are the one expressing yourself on your board not me!
Some skateboarders will go crazy with their grip tape and use all sorts of whacked colors. You can find grip tape in almost every color under the rainbow, so don’t be afraid to experiment and get a little crazy! If you don’t like the looks, you can always take it off, right?
There are so many products on the market to accessorize your board, that the possibilities are endless. Of course, you will want to keep in mind that stickers, logos, decals and such can leave a tacky residue on your board when you take them off. You can usually scrape it away, but it can be a pain. Or you could be lazy and cover it with grip tape like me!
Tricking out your board is all about expressing yourself. For some of us, we love to go all out, for others, keeping it basic is just cool with them. Just remember to have fun and do what you want. Remember, originate, don’t imitate!
How to Keep Yourself Safe while Skateboarding
One of the best things you can do to stay safe while skating is to wear proper safety gear. At the very least, wear a helmet and pads. If you can’t (or don’t want) to wear pads, just go for a long sleeve shirt and some jeans. Nothing can be substituted for a helmet, though, so please try and wear one of those.
Some people think a hat or beanie will protect their head – it won’t. Like I said above, nothing is a substitute for a helmet. Try to find a skate helmet, but if you can’t find one of those, go for a wakeboarding or snowboarding helmet. Don’t wear a bike helmet, those don’t provide the protection a skater needs.
There are other things you can do that will keep you safe on a skateboard; like wearing knee pads and elbow pads. It’s important to have the right kind of shoes on, too. If you have shoes that are loose, you could end up with a broken ankle or foot. If you don’t wear shoes at all, well, you’re crazy and probably won’t listen to my advice anyway.
One thing that a lot of people like to do while skateboarding is listening to music with their iPods or other portable music devices. Skateboarding requires your 100 percent concentration; and listening for oncoming traffic or other skaters is part of that concentration.
Skateboarding could be the most dangerous sport ever (for beginners, at least.) Of course, every sport is dangerous, not just skateboarding, so you should really try to protect yourself as best as you can no matter what sport you’re into.
Start Learning How to Skateboard
Skateboarding is a great pastime and very entertaining sport for everyone. A lot of people begin skateboarding at a young age but anyone can learn. Before you can get started you need to get a couple of things.
First you will need a skateboard which is actually the main thing. A skateboard comes with a deck which comes in different sizes to fit the size of your feet and makes you feel comfortable when riding. A skateboard has four wheels that also come in different sizes depending what type of skateboarder you are usually the bigger sizes are for vert or the ramps and the smaller wheels are for doing street.
Another thing the skateboard has is trucks used for connecting the board and wheels to your skateboard so you can ride along smoothly. Other equipment that is essential to a skateboard is the hardware and the bearings this is what keeps the board together.
Second thing you might want is some safety equipment that will protect you when you fall and yes you will fall. Safety equipment includes a helmet too protect your head, knee pads and elbow pads which as the name states protect those areas. Also there is the option of wrist guards which keeps you from landing on your wrist. A lot of people fall they tend to put their hand out to try and catch themselves and that’s just by human nature.
Third thing you need is shoes preferably skate shoes. Skate shoes are designed to make it easier to skate and do tricks giving you durability and comfort while riding on your skateboard. Skate shoes come in all different sizes and types yes not to mention different colors. So take your time when you are making your selection because no skate shoe is created equal.
Finally, after you got all your necessary equipment you are ready to start learning how to skateboard. You can begin by just riding your skateboard and getting used to it so you will be able to begin learning tricks. To start learning tricks you will need to learn the very first trick that every skater most know is the Ollie. The Ollie is the first trick in every skater’s bag of tricks and the foundation of almost every skate trick.
In order to learn more tricks you can watch YouTube and look for skate videos or trick tip videos if you have a certain trick you want to accomplish. You can also buy skate videos or just ask your friends I’m sure they will help you.
